If IT must adapt, so should businesspeople
by Hannah Smalltree - hsmalltree@techtarget.

SearchDataManagement.com's editorial team has logged some frequent
flyer miles lately. I recently covered TDWI's MDM Insight event and
last week, our news editor Jeff Kelly flew from snowy Boston to sunny
San Diego to cover the annual DAMA conference. At the conference,
keynote speaker Michael Blechar of Gartner warned that data
management pros who want a job in five to 10 years had better
"adapt." No pressure or anything. Blechar said that data and process
are intertwined, which will change how businesses think about data
management. Then, he laid out some specific best practices for data
management professionals, which Jeff summarized in the article.

But...I only hope that someone's giving a similar "adaptation" speech
to businesspeople, because the world is changing for everyone. Some
old-school businesspeople may need to start thinking differently
about IT and data management staff -- respecting their knowledge and
expertise, which goes far beyond keeping systems up and running. If
new partnerships are to be forged between business and IT, I think
both groups must adapt to create a truly collaborative environment.

I've been musing about what I'd say if I gave a speech urging
businesspeople to adapt. Here are some ideas -- and I'd love to hear
your thoughts on this, too:

** Give more than lip service to data as a corporate asset. Think
about how lost you'd be without it. Now, go buy lunch for your data
management team.
** Think of IT as a professional partner, not just a service
provider. Really listen, consider their opinions, examine their ideas
and know that they want to do the right thing for the business, too.
** Make an effort to communicate better with IT. If you don't
understand something, don't roll your eyes and dismiss it as
geek-speak -- ask for more clarification. If IT doesn't understand
something about the business, take the time to explain it.
** Embrace collaboration. As data management pros and architects
rethink business processes and systems, it's a great time to
collaborate and brainstorm how you could truly transform the business
together through innovative technology changes. Don't assume you know
what's possible until you bring it up. And don't assume there's only
one "right" way to do something.
** Accept change and have faith that the outcome will be well
worth it. Interfaces may change. Processes may change. You may need
to share your data. Remain optimistic that change can lead to better
things.

Now I want to know what you thought of the DAMA keynote. Do you think
you need to adapt? Are you planning to follow the recommended best
practices? What would YOU tell a captive business audience about
adaptation? Email me at hsmalltree@techtarget.com with your thoughts
and let me know! And as always, have a great week.
